Ethnic Games

Pakida and Chaturangam were the popular games of men in Kerala whereas Pallamkuzhi was that of women and children in Vadakkinies-the interior of the house.

Pakida

A game played between tribal villages is occasionally staged in Blackberry Hills.

After the harvest, paddy fields of Kerala turn to be battle grounds where the heroes of different villages prove their mettle.  Players from even distant villages camp in the sight and continue the game day or night.  The spirit of the game used to go to any extend, even to pledging one’s own wife as in the case of the epic character Yudhishtira who pledged his wife Draupathi in Mahabharata.

Chaturanagam

This was originally a royal game which later spread among the public.  It was the Arabs who carried this game to Europe where Chaturangam was modified to chess.

Pallamkuzhi

A simple game played with colourful seeds which are stored in two pits on the game board.  They must be cleverly put one each in the small pits.  You must be the fist one to gather maximum number of seeds.
